Figs and olives are the two strangest fruits in the region.
Why did the residents of the region differ in the names of these two fruits in particular?!
The truth is that figs and olives were a problem for me when I was young, because they caused me confusion, anger, and confusion when I was young…. They are the only two fruits that always caused me three mistakes in three situations.

Fig and olive are two names for four fruits in our local dialect in Yemen, and in a strange way.
In our local dialect, the fig fruit is called (plus), and the prickly pear fruit is called (plus) in our language as well.
It is true that we differentiate between the two fruits in case we are confused and we want to distinguish between them by calling them (plus choc – plus turk), but we do not always use the distinction (choc or choc) in our tongue.
Also, the well-known olive fruit that grows in the Mediterranean basin and oil is extracted from it is called (our olives), and the guava fruit is also called (our olives).
– The first position
When I was asked to go to the market to buy regular figs (bulls), I would go and buy prickly pears, and when I came back they would tell me not this, but regular figs… so I told them this is called prickly pear. You did not specify what kind it was.
After a while, when I was asked to buy figs, I thought in a smart way, so I went to buy regular figs as requested last time, but when I came back, they said, “Not this one, but prickly pears.”
And so I couldn’t differentiate between them.
The second position
When I was asked to go to the market to buy (olives), I would go and buy a guava from the market, and when I came back, they would tell me not this, but the olives from the grocery store… so I told them, “This is called olives,” and I bought olives and I did not make a mistake.
After a while, when I was asked to buy olives, I thought in a smart way, so I went to buy olives according to the request of the previous time, but when I came back, they said, “Not this, but olives from the market.”
And so I couldn’t differentiate between them.
Third position
When we used to go with our friends to play, and we would go to steal fruits from the orchard near us, there was an ordinary fig tree in the orchard, and next to it was another large tree that produced fruits similar to figs, but its taste was not sweet, but it was tart, and it was called (al-tulq). So I went to pick from the tolaq tree while they picked from the fig tree, and when we leave the orchard I show them my work and they say to me, “This is not balsam, but it is tolaq.”
These three mistakes always caused me both anger and confusion when I was young, because they were repeated and put me in a wrong position, and when I was thinking about the reason, I did not know where it was, due to my young age.
I used to ask myself why this happened to me and not to others, and I used to say, even others have this difficulty but hide it.
I’m thinking and I don’t know why, and why it’s so difficult for me to understand.
With time……. I decided to fix those problems that were causing me embarrassment and anger due to the ridicule of the house, by deciding that I would ask whoever asked me to buy these two fruits about the type of fruit, so if he asked me to buy a plus, I would tell him, is he the one who is coming? He has forks, and when he asks me to buy olives, I tell him: Are they the olives that are eaten with cheese?!
Over time and when I grew up, I remembered those situations with these two fruits, and I used to ask why out of strangeness.
I used to say that I did not have difficulty, or even with others, but they were hiding it, because there are two fruits that have the same name, and there are also two fruits that have the same name, so how can there not be confusion with me, because whoever does not have confusion with him is lying?!
The truth is……..those situations remained in my memory, as funny situations that I used when I wanted to remember funny situations with friends, but I did not think about searching for the reason seriously.
With time……I grew and my interest in reading, researching, thinking about things, and knowing the reasons for things grew.
Until one day…. I remembered the problems that were happening to me with those two fruits, and I decided to deal with the matter seriously and search for the real reason, after I found that I was right and that there was something logical behind the matter, after I found the same problem as me. It exists in another place outside my country, but the matter developed to search for other reasons related to the matter.

One day, I was browsing comments on an article uploaded by a person on the social networking site Facebook, asking about the name of the prickly pear fruit in the countries of the region. .
Among the commentators were two people from Algeria who were arguing in the comments about the naming of the fruit, between calling it (Christian Karmus and Indian Karmus).
I followed the comments between them, and decided to do an experiment, and see if my intuition would be accurate, so I entered between them, raised a picture of a fig and asked them: What is the name of this fruit among you?!
It was a surprise. My intuition was correct, after one of them commented to me that her name was Al-Karmous.
I felt that my problem had a real scientific basis, and that not many people paid attention to this problem.
I began to feel that there really was a secret and a mystery that needed to be explained.
The situation we have in Yemen also exists in Algeria, as the same two fruits have the same name in Algeria.

In other words…if I had been born in Algeria, this problem would have happened to me and would have caused me anger, embarrassment, and confusion.
I reached this meaning and laughed, and the matter became serious when I asked myself……. Why do these two fruits have the same name in Yemen and Algeria?! And why are the two names different?

The truth is that this information that I obtained from Algeria attracted me greatly and was always present with me most of the time, and there was a mathematical equation that needed to be solved.
With time… I noticed something important about the matter. I found another similarity between the situation in Yemen and Algeria, which causes confusion:
Prickly pear in Yemen is called… Plus Turk
Prickly pear in Algeria is called… Karmos Nassara
What is amazing is this consistency, even in the suffix. The fruit was attributed to a people in Yemen (Turks), and the fruit was attributed to a people in Algeria (Al-Nasarah – Indians).
The story increased my excitement…and increased my motivation to search for the logical reason.
The matter was initially related to explaining the situation in Yemen, then the matter moved to explaining the situation in Algeria, then the matter moved to explaining the reason for the similarity between Yemen and Algeria, because explaining this similarity between Yemen and Algeria, the matter will be resolved in every country with certainty.
There is something scientifically logical.
There is a common cultural structure between Yemen and Algeria, which is what made the two fruits bear the same name.
I wonder what is this cultural structure that made the two fruits carry the same name on people’s tongues?!
Is it related to the characteristics of the two fruits?
The topic has become more interesting and interesting to me, and it really deserves serious research.
With the passage of time…and one day while I was talking to a friend from Morocco about customs and traditions in Morocco and Yemen, this matter came to mind, so I seized the opportunity and asked the friend about the local name for those two fruits, and it was a surprise. .
The situation also exists in Morocco, with the same name as Algeria.

The situation seems to be a general rule in part of the region, especially in Misr, the Maghreb, and Yemen. As for Iraq and the Levant, they deviate from the rule because they have different names for the two fruits.
It also seemed to me like the situation in Tunisia and Libya, within the general rule, even if they have different names, their situation is the same as in Algeria and Morocco.
In other words… the people of Tunisia and Libya currently call figs “Karmus,” and they used to call the prickly pear by the same name in Algeria and Morocco, “Karmus Hindi,” but with time they shortened the name and deleted the word “Karmus,” and kept the word “Hindi,” for distinction, differentiation, and ease only. This means that the original name is Indian Karmos.

With the passage of time and research……….a question came to my mind: The name (plus) that we give to figs in Yemen seems to be a name that is not a local name, it seems to be a Greek name, even the name Karmos in Morocco seems to be a Greek name as well? !
Is it possible that the name was introduced by the Turks to Yemen because the name in Yemen is linked to the Turks, or is it possible that the name was introduced during the Roman occupation of the region?! .
What is the origin of the word (plus)?!
I decided to search in the Greek dictionary, and I searched for the name of fig in the dictionary, but I did not find it identical with our name. I decided to search in the Latin dictionary, and I searched for the name of fig in the dictionary, but I did not find it identical with our name.
But a thought came to my mind: What if I looked in the dictionary for the name olive?!
The surprise was… olives are called “plus” in Latin.
Something completely illogical happened.
How did a Latin word reach Yemen when it is a local fruit that does not require the residents of Yemen to import a Latin name…. What is this illogical coincidence that the name Plus means olive and fig at the same time?

Why did the confusion and confusion…always occur among the residents of the region regarding only two specific fruits, and why specifically in the names of two fruits mentioned in the Qur’an, which most of the residents of the region believe in?!
Is it possible that the logical and scientific reason that created this confusion and confusion is related to the Holy Qur’an (figs), and why did Yemen have the condition more than the rest of the region until it contained another name in the Qur’an (olives)?!
Could it be that the reason…is the presence of a cultural force that ruled the region and was the one that imposed those names on the residents of the region, either by force or cunning and trickery, in order to change the connotations and meanings of words in the Holy Qur’an?!
But what great importance did that force have, which made it design a project to change the meaning and meanings of two common names in the Qur’an for people, and create a project to carry out this work? The force could not change the names of the sun, the moon, the stars, the water, and the seas, and it did not. You can change the names of pomegranates and grapes, so why bother with two ordinary fruits (figs and olives)?
