I have my own definition of myth, but I prefer to write it at the end of the article, after we get to know the common knowledge of the meaning of myth, and follow the current approach to understanding myths.

Historian Ahmed Daoud says about the legend: The legend is a true record of specific historical events that have often been subject to improvements in language, style, and poetic imagination, while definitely preserving the historical material to be recorded. It is subject to research and scrutiny before it is adopted and preserved in temples as an essential part of the heritage that plays educational, pedagogical, and religious roles. . Ancient myths reflect real historical events, and only the researcher and historian must know how to extract historical material from them.

As for a myth: a popular tale created by the imagination that varies in intellectual and taste levels from a backward environment to a more civilized environment. It is transmitted by people across generations, adding to it and subtracting from it, to eventually emerge as a mostly oral popular production.

There are those who define the myth as a story linked to ancient gods, and that the characters of the myth were essentially ancient gods worshiped by humans, and it is a story told by the gods. As for Strauss, he says that the myth consists of three things: structure, symbols, and meaning.

As for the thinker Lukacs, he presented to us a new concept, which is superstructures, by which he means: the higher forms of consciousness represented by (religion, mythology, and art), which cannot be removed from any society at all, and these superstructures give their presence to reality with every transformation. Or a development in the infrastructure of society that takes many different forms over time.

Accordingly, myth is a superstructure, a higher consciousness, that cannot be removed from any society. Myth continues to have an influence throughout history, but the myth can take on a new form other than the first form, while the myth retains its basic structure (structure).

Myth is like language…a living organism that develops with time. Just as the vocabulary and structures of the language develop while retaining the rule, the symbolism, characters, and scenarios of the story develop while maintaining the original structure.

We will try to get to know the legend more through an example that talks about three legends that take place in one place, an ancient legend, and we will see how it has undergone transformations throughout history while its basic structure remains.

The legend is the legend of the founding of the city of Carthage.

Important note: This legend was transferred from Greece, and we do not know if this belief really existed, because there is nothing in our heritage and local archives that confirms this, and there are no inscriptions that confirm it, and we can say that we do not know the original truth… because there is no Interest in archaeological excavation. However, despite this, I believe that the form of the initial myth will not be difficult to imagine because it will be similar to the rest of the myths and religions of the ancient region, and the closest to it will be the myth of Isis, Osiris, and Horus.

1- The legend talks about a queen named Elissa, the daughter of the king of Tyre. She quarreled with her brother, who also killed her husband, so she decided to leave her homeland with her treasures, and after a long journey, she anchored the ships on the coast of North Africa in present-day Tunisia. She decided to establish a city and called it Carthage, or “Qarat Hadasht.” The first legend written by Greek historians says that Alyssa negotiated with the ruler of the country to grant her land on which to build her city, but the king refused to give her more than the area of an ox hide, so Alyssa accepted that to the astonishment of her companions, but the princess was harboring a smart plan that would enable her to reach the city of Carthage. ● In the first myth, the queen commits suicide and remains the ruler of the country, and in the second myth, the king does not die, but rather the ruler of the country is killed.

● The last difference is the original homeland of the hero of the legend. The original homeland of the queen in the first legend is Tire Lebanon, and the original homeland of the king in the second legend is the land of Himyar.

3- The legend tells about the Islamic conquest of Africa and the story of the leader Uqba bin Nafi, who conquered Africa and the birds and animals left after he called on Allah and laid the border on the city of Kairouan.

Then Ibn Khaldun came and added to the legend the story of Uqba with the ruler of that region, Kusaila, when he ordered him to slaughter the ram himself. Kusaila became angry, so correspondence began with the Franks and they showed him the opportunity. He gathered an army and followed Uqba and his companions. Then a battle took place between the two at the city walls, and Uqba was killed on the spot. A lazy hand in a one-on-one duel.

Now notice the similarities between the third myth and the previous two myths.

● In the first legend, there is a queen, in the second there is a king, and in the third there is a military leader who holds religious veneration.

● We are still revolving around the geography of Tunisia…….. In the first legend, the city of Carthage is planned, in the second the city of Africa, and in the third, the city of Kairouan is planned.

This makes us ask an important question: Did Ibn Khaldun at that time believe that the city of Toroada was the same as the city of Carthage, so that he borrowed from Homer’s Iliad? Even the pronunciation of the two cities was similar as well. (Carthage = Troy) Knowing that Herodotus spoke in his history about the inhabitants of that country and that they spoke about their origins coming from Troy, or was Ibn Khaldun only transferring historical narratives from Greek books?

● There remains a very important point in common between the three legends, which is Greece. In the first legend, we find that it was transferred from Greece. As for the second legend, it talks about a Himyarite king whose name appears to be a Greek name. In the third legend, we also find features of Greek translations.

The ancients assumed that mountains and valleys were gods, and the legend of Elissa talks about a large plateau around which Carthage was built. The plateau was the ruler of the country.

The ancients believed that the new earth had gods ruling it, and victory over those gods was achieved by making that land their true faith, and parts of the true gods must be distributed over the entire earth. In the Egyptian myth of Osiris, parts of his body are distributed over the entire soil of Misr, meaning that the belief It will be one throughout that land, which is the doctrine of Osiris. This same method and story occurred in the legend of Elissa when she performed a trick and divided the bull’s skin into small parts and gained a large geographical area.
